SchoolWorks® Equity Audits provide schools and districts with a comprehensive, objective examination of policies, practices, and outcomes that influence equitable access and opportunity for all students. Grounded in research-based equity frameworks and best practices, our audits help educational leaders move beyond intention toward measurable progress.
Through a structured and collaborative process, SchoolWorks examines how systems shape student experiences and outcomes. The result is a clear, evidence-based understanding of where equity is thriving, where barriers exist, and what steps leaders can take to foster more inclusive and supportive learning environments. The process establishes a shared starting point for improvement, equipping stakeholders with the insight and alignment needed to pursue meaningful, sustainable change.
An equity audit is an evaluative process designed to:
The process includes a site visit, which is conducted over a period of 3-5 days by a racially diverse team of reviewers utilizing a transparent set of standards aligned to research-based best practices. The review team collects data at the school(s) through methods such as document review, surveys, stakeholder interviews/focus groups, and observational walk-throughs. They then analyze and triangulate evidence to surface trends in the effectiveness of implementation of best practices across the domains of instruction, students’ opportunities to learn, educators’ opportunities to learn, and leadership/governance. The final report provides an objective snapshot of the school or district environment as a baseline for growth and continuous improvement.
Many schools and districts recognize the importance of equity work but hesitate to begin, often concerned that an audit will document challenges that feel difficult to solve. In practice, equity audits do far more than identify gaps.
By creating a shared, evidence-based understanding of current practices, the process unifies stakeholders around common language, priorities, and goals. The audit surfaces context, not just outcomes, helping leaders understand why disparities exist and where meaningful change is possible.
Rather than asking, “What are we doing wrong?” the equity audit reframes the conversation as, “Where are we starting, and how do we move forward together?”
