School Improvement Supports

School Improvement Planning

SchoolWorks® supports schools, districts, and networks in developing high-quality School Improvement Plans (SIPs) that serve as the foundation for meaningful, sustained improvement. A strong SIP is a strategic, multi-year roadmap that aligns priorities, guides action and drives measurable outcomes for students.

The planning process is a critical step following a needs assessment or School Quality Review, translating key findings into focused goals and actionable strategies. SchoolWorks partners closely with leadership teams and stakeholders to ensure that plans are aligned to state and district requirements while remaining practical, data-driven, and responsive to each school’s unique context.

Our Process

Working in collaboration with the school team, SchoolWorks facilitates a structured, collaborative planning process that moves from understanding the current state to building a clear, actionable plan for improvement. Our approach emphasizes stakeholder engagement, alignment to accountability expectations, and the development of systems that support ongoing implementation and refinement.

Grounding in Evidence

We begin by anchoring the planning process in a clear understanding of the school’s current performance. Building from a needs assessment or School Quality Review, we guide teams through reviewing and validating key findings, identifying priority areas for improvement, and conducting root cause analysis to ensure that strategies address underlying challenges. This step ensures that the plan is focused on the most critical drivers of performance.

Setting Direction and Priorities

Working in close partnership with school leaders, the SchoolWorks team facilitates an initial strategy session to align on the key priorities within the state accountability framework, authorizer performance framework, and/or district goals. During this session, the team also reviews the expectations and required components of the resulting plan. This foundational step creates clarity around the highest-priority areas to be addressed in the plan.

Strategy Development and Action Planning

SchoolWorks facilitators host a series of planning sessions with the school improvement team to translate priorities into actionable strategies that are realistic given the school’s resources.

During these sessions, participants explore and select evidence-based practices aligned to each goal and develop detailed action steps, timelines, and responsibilities for each task. Key performance indicators (KPIs) and interim benchmarks are established for each strategy to ensure that progress is measurable and aligned to intended outcomes.

Planning sessions can be conducted in-person, virtually, or through a hybrid format, and are scheduled to align with the timeline and availability of the school planning team.

Plan Development and Alignment

Following facilitated sessions, SchoolWorks collaborates with leadership to codify the School Improvement Plan into a clear, comprehensive document that meets all state and district requirements. In addition to priority goals and aligned strategies, the plan typically includes monitoring and reporting structures and implementation timelines.

Annual Refinement and Continuous Improvement

Because effective improvement is ongoing, SchoolWorks supports schools in establishing an annual planning cycle to review progress and refine the plan over time. This includes analyzing data and implementation progress, adjusting strategies based on evidence and feedback, and updating benchmarks and action steps to reflect current challenges.

“Our partnership with SchoolWorks has resulted in a great deal of measurable progress. Our school team looks forward to the continued impact of this ongoing work.”
